When should I submit to how many festivals? Some cases.

We collected some cases of festival strategies to help you decide if you want to start big or go broader. Here's a short overview of the best strategies, depending on your expectations, goals and your previous submissions.

START BIG! - A-list festivals

  • your film is a world premiere or just had its premiere
  • you didn't submit to more than 10 festivals yet
  • you are patient and several people around you see a lot of potential in your film

Recommended Strategy
Festival Distribution Period 12 to 24 months (240 to 480 festivals)
Subscription minimum 8 months
Festival List Preference Best Strategy for 6-8 months
Festival Lists on Demand add 1-3 lists after 6-8 months and every 3 months thereafter

Subscribe to FestivalWhizz for a minimum of 8 months. FestivalWhizz will provide you with festivals which require world-, international  or country premieres, ranked on the top of your lists. Start carefully and always keep the dates of the festivals in mind when submitting to several world- and international premiere festivals. After your first international screening you can start targeting good country premieres. After 6-8 months you can add some Festivals Lists on demand to submit in a broader scale.

To navigate through the premieres, check out the following post: Why is your film's premiere status so important?

GO BROAD!

  • you want your film seen by as many people as possible
  • you already covered the big ones (or don't want to as you don't see enough potential)
  • or your film already got selected at a few festivals

Recommended Strategy
Festival Distribution Period 12 to 24 months (240 to 480 festivals)
Subscription minimum 6-8 months
Festival List Preference Best Strategy for 2-4 months
Festival Lists on Demand add 1-3 lists in the 1st month and every 3 months thereafter. Preference of Low Fees possible.

Make sure to add all the countries your film was already screened in and to keep the status of your submissions updated in order to avoid that FestivalWhizz will show you any festivals you are not eligible anymore. It's recommend to add festival lists on demand every three months. (If you don't want to submit to all the A-list festivals, just put any small country, e.g. Ă…land Islands, in the list of the countries you already screened in.)

Keep in mind that if you submitted already to many festivals in the month before joining FestivalWhizz, you might have some of these festivals in your list. If you plan to subscribe for at least for 6 months, we can import your previous submissions. Just contact us.

GO BROADER!

  • your film is already released online publicly or/and
  • your film had its festival premiere more than 6 months ago
